Small business in Ladysmith
Ladysmith sits on the 49th parallel, 23 km south of Nanaimo and 88 km north of Victoria, on the traditional territory of the Stz'uminus First Nation, whose connection to the land the Town describes as more than 5,000 years old. The Town put its population at 9,903 in 2024. It began in 1898 as James Dunsmuir's company town at Oyster Harbour, and coal was its economic foundation until the Extension mines closed in 1931. Logging took over from 1936, and the Town says it still plays an important role.
The Town's investor profile names forestry and wood products, marine services, tourism and retail as its key economic sectors, and describes a service-oriented economy with a significant goods-producing side and many small and home-based businesses. It points to two industrial parks, a harbour used by commercial and pleasure boats, the Trans-Canada Highway through town, and Nanaimo Airport just to the north.
Ladysmith is a member municipality of the Cowichan Valley Regional District, and business licences come from the Town, with a prorated fee for new businesses that start in the second half of the year. A Ladysmith licence also covers mobile services in Duncan, North Cowichan and Lake Cowichan, and an inter-community add-on extends that to other participating Island municipalities. The Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce runs the Spirit of Ladysmith Business Awards and Business Before Hours networking, and speaks for local business to every level of government.
Working with us from Ladysmith
From the Alberni Valley, Ladysmith is a longer trip than the Oceanside towns: Highway 4 east through Cathedral Grove, then south past Nanaimo. We meet clients in person only in Port Alberni and the Valley, so working with us from Ladysmith happens online from start to finish.
We work inside your QuickBooks Online, Xero or Sage file, collect receipts through AutoEntry and everything else through secure document sharing, and keep in touch by email, phone or video. That covers monthly bookkeeping, catch-up bookkeeping for a business that has fallen behind, payroll with T4s, ROEs and remittances, GST/HST filing and personal tax returns.
We are based in Port Alberni. See bookkeeping in Port Alberni for more about us, or how our pricing works.
