Small business in Comox

The Town of Comox describes itself as an oceanside community on the east coast of Vancouver Island with just under 15,000 residents. It is one of three municipalities in the Comox Valley and is home to CFB 19 Wing Comox, which the Town calls the only Canadian Air Force base on the west coast of Canada, as well as the Comox Valley Airport (YQQ) and a BC Ferries route across to Powell River on the mainland.

The Town says Comox sits in the centre of a region known for agriculture and seafood production, and that it is a growing tourism destination. Its marina serves commercial, sport-fishing and pleasure craft, so a fair number of local businesses earn most of their year in the warm months and need their books to carry them through the rest.

All businesses operating in Comox need a Town business licence, home-based businesses included. Licences cover the calendar year and can be applied for online or with a PDF form. The Town takes payment at the Town Hall counter by cash, cheque or Interac debit, or by online banking, but not by credit card. Mobile businesses can add an inter-community licence, which covers 12 participating central Island communities.

Working with us from Comox

Comox is at the far side of the Comox Valley from us. From Port Alberni the route is Highway 4 east past Cameron Lake to Highway 19 at Qualicum Beach, then north on the Inland Island Highway to the Comox Valley exits and through Courtenay. We do not travel to Comox for meetings or pickups; in-person work is for the Alberni Valley only.

Everything else happens online. You upload statements and receipts securely, we work in your QuickBooks Online, Xero or Sage file, and AutoEntry can capture receipts from your phone. Because nothing depends on an office visit, the arrangement keeps working if your household is posted elsewhere in Canada.

We are based in Port Alberni. See bookkeeping in Port Alberni for more about us, or how our pricing works.

Common questions

I run a business from home in Comox. Do I need to be a certain size before bookkeeping is worth it?

No. The Town requires a licence for home-based businesses too, and small operations are often where clean books save the most time at tax season. Our published monthly packages include options for businesses with only one account and a modest number of transactions.

Our family is connected to 19 Wing and we may be posted. What happens to my bookkeeping if we move?

Nothing has to change. We already work with Comox clients entirely online, so as long as your business keeps operating in Canada we can keep doing your books from Port Alberni wherever you land.

My charter business out of the Comox marina earns most of its income in summer. How do you handle that?

We reconcile every month, so the busy season and the quiet months are both on the record as they happen. That makes GST/HST filing straightforward and gives you a clear picture of cash going into the off-season.

Can we meet in Comox or can I drop off a box of receipts?

No. We meet people in person only in Port Alberni and the Alberni Valley. Comox clients send documents through secure upload or snap receipts with AutoEntry, and we talk by phone or video.

Do you prepare personal tax returns for Comox residents?

Yes, personal returns are one of our services and are done online like everything else. Corporate returns go through our retained accountant and are quoted separately.
