Small business in Bamfield

Bamfield is not an incorporated municipality. It is Electoral Area A of the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, and the ACRD in Port Alberni acts as its local government, providing services such as building inspection, the Bamfield water system, the transfer station and community parks. A Bamfield Area Services Committee, formed in 2023, advises the ACRD Board and brings together the area director, Huu-ay-aht First Nations, the Uchucklesaht Tribe Government and community volunteers.

Much of the visitor traffic comes from the West Coast Trail. Its northern trailhead and Parks Canada's Pachena Bay orientation centre are about 5 km south of Bamfield, the trail is open and reservable from May 1 to September 30, and Parks Canada notes there is no cell service at the trailhead. Bamfield is also home to the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre, a not-for-profit charity for coastal marine research and education on the traditional territory of the Huu-ay-aht First Nations.

The Bamfield Chamber of Commerce connects local businesses, residents and visitors in what it calls the heart of Barkley Sound, and keeps a community map of businesses and services. Community Futures Alberni-Clayoquot, based in Port Alberni, lists Bamfield in its service area for small business financing and support.

Working with us from Bamfield

Bamfield is reached from Port Alberni by the Bamfield Road, a logging road of about 76 km that the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre says takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours depending on conditions, and which is now chipsealed. The 2025 Mount Underwood Fire left construction and burned areas along it, so DriveBC is the place to check before a trip. The other way in is by water: a passenger and freight ship sails from Port Alberni down the Alberni Inlet to Bamfield's east and west docks on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays year round.

We do not travel to Bamfield or collect paperwork there; our in-person work stays in the Alberni Valley. Bamfield clients work with us online. You upload statements and receipts securely when you have a connection, AutoEntry captures receipts from your phone, we keep your QuickBooks Online, Xero or Sage file current, and we talk by phone or video. Payroll, GST/HST filing, catch-up work and personal tax returns run the same way.

We are based in Port Alberni. See bookkeeping in Port Alberni for more about us, or how our pricing works.

Common questions

Bamfield has no town hall. Who do I deal with for local permits?

Bamfield is Electoral Area A of the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, so the ACRD office in Port Alberni is its local government and handles services such as building inspection. Your federal and provincial accounts, like GST/HST and payroll remittances, work the same as anywhere else, and that is the part we look after.

My internet in Bamfield is patchy. Can I still work with you online?

Yes. Nothing we do needs a constant connection: you can upload receipts and statements in batches whenever you are online, or keep receipts for a trip to town and send them then. We set a regular monthly rhythm so a slow week does not leave your books behind.

My business runs from May to September with the trail season. Do you only work with year-round businesses?

No. Seasonal businesses still have year-round obligations, such as GST/HST returns, payroll records and T4s for summer staff, and year-end figures for your tax return. We keep the books current through the busy months and tidy everything up in the off-season.

Can I drop my paperwork off when I'm in Port Alberni?

Clients who live and work in the Alberni Valley can meet us in person. For a Bamfield business, we work online, so you send documents by secure upload rather than bringing them in, and we talk by phone or video.

Do you file corporate tax returns for Bamfield companies?

We are bookkeepers, not accountants. We prepare personal tax returns ourselves, while corporate returns go through our retained accountant and are quoted separately.
